Gdansk (about 1605) Jerzy (Georg) Daniel Schultz was born in Gdansk, Poland, probably about 1615. He learnt the art of painting in the workshop of a famous painter, his uncle, Daniel Schultz the Older (?-1646), for about five years. After his death Jerzy Daniel went to the Netherlands and France to study there. It took him about three years. He came back to Poland John II in 1649 and became a private painter to the new Polish king - John II. After the abdication of John II, he was private painter to the next two kings - Michael I and John III. The kings were giving him some diplomatical missions. And, for example, in 1670 he was sent to Vienna with his portrait of king Michael for Eleanor, who was going to be the queen and wife of Michael. Daniel lived in Warsaw till 1660, when he moved to his hometown, Gdansk. But even then didn't quit working for kings and very often he came back and worked in his workshop in Wilanow Palace. Michael I He died in Gdansk in 1683, in age of 68. Some parts of his biography are still unknown and undiscovered.

Another problem is nationality of Daniel Schultz. Was he feeling Polish, German or just a citizen of Gdansk? Because Gdansk in XVII'th century, except being part of Poland was having also some special rights and a big feeling of independence.
For example famous astronomer from Gdansk, Jan Heweliusz found himself only as a citizen of Gdansk. I think it was the same with Daniel Schultz and we should call him just a citizen of Gdansk.

He used to paint as Daniel Schultz the Younger and won his fame on great portraits of Polish kings and other important polish nobels. His paintings are the best part of the Polish Baroque art. contemporary pictures of Gdansk We can see in them a big influence of Dutch and Flemish masters of the 17th century, especially Rembrandt. Typical for Schultz's paintings are also experiments with light and shade, deep colours and very high technical level. Also in his portraits we can see some kind of psychological deepness, which tells us very much about the character of the painted person. Between 1660 and 1669 Schultz started a new period of his art life - he painted four nature paintings. The most interesting of them are "The Duck Hunt" and "The Three Foxes". He never painted portrait of himself, so his face is unknown.

The most interesting of his works are portraits. Most impressive of them are portraits of: John II, Michael I, "Family Portrait of Dedesz Aga", Wincenty Gosiewski, Stanisław(?) Krasiński. Also on very high level are pictures "The Duck Hunt", "Saint Casimir Jagiellonian". Schultz was signing his paintings very rarely, in effect, lots of his paintings are known as "unknown artist painting". His paintings are now parts of collections of Petersburg Hermitage, Stockholm National Museum, State Art Collection of Wawel Castle and Gdansk National Museum.
